Social Data Versions
Overview
Santiment social metrics support versioning. A version identifies the underlying dataset and methodology used to calculate a social metric. This makes it possible to work with multiple interpretations of the same metric without changing the metric name itself.
Social-data versioning serves three purposes:
- Audience-specific datasets. Different versions can analyze different sets of accounts, enabling metrics tailored to a specific social audience.
- Processing methodology. Versions can represent alternative technical approaches to collecting or processing social data.
- Point-in-time (PIT) data. PIT versions support historically accurate analysis by using the dataset state that would have been available at each point in time.
Available Versions
| Version | Description |
|---|---|
original:v1 | The original social dataset. It has been collected and maintained since 2021 and includes many long-standing participants in the crypto market. |
modern:v1 | A dataset designed to track engagement from currently active Crypto Twitter users. |
modern_pit:v1 | The point-in-time version of modern:v1. Use it when historical analyses require PIT-consistent data. |
Choose the version deliberately. Data from different versions may differ because their account universe, processing logic, or historical availability rules are different. Avoid comparing values across versions as though they were generated by one identical dataset.
Selecting a Version
Specify the desired version through the version argument of getMetric. The
metric name remains unchanged; only the dataset version changes.
For example, the query below retrieves social_volume_twitter for Bitcoin from
both the modern dataset and its PIT counterpart over the same two-hour interval.
{ modern: getMetric( metric: "social_volume_twitter", version: "modern:v1" ) { timeseriesDataJson( slug: "bitcoin" from: "utc_now-2h" to: "utc_now" interval: "5m" ) }
modernPit: getMetric( metric: "social_volume_twitter", version: "modern_pit:v1" ) { timeseriesDataJson( slug: "bitcoin" from: "utc_now-2h" to: "utc_now" interval: "5m" ) }}Not every version is available on every plan. See Version Access by Plan.
Which Version to Use
Use original:v1
Use the original version when your analysis needs the long-running social dataset maintained since 2021, including long-standing crypto-market participants.
Use modern:v1
Use the modern version when you want to measure engagement among currently active Crypto Twitter users.
Use modern_pit:v1
Use the PIT version for historical research, backtesting, or any workflow where data must reflect what was available at the time rather than a later revised dataset.
Keep the version fixed
For a single analysis, dashboard, or backtest, keep the version consistent across all queries and time ranges unless you intentionally want to study methodological differences.
